New cargo terminal at Ahmedabad airport to be operational soon
AHMEDABAD : Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad is all set to commence operations in its newly built cargo terminal very soon.
“All necessary approvals are in place and the trial runs were conducted. It is expected that the new cargo terminal will be operational within a few days,” said a source.
Set up at the Terminal-III of the SVPI airport, the upcoming terminal will have an estimated capacity of handling at least 2,500 metric tonne cargos in a single day as is learnt from top sources. This expansion of the cargo terminal will enable the airport to handle more volumes of international cargo besides domestic supplies.
The new terminal will have an updated security in place along with modern equipment to supplement handling of large volumes of cargo more effectively, informed a source privy to the development.
The terminal is spread over 1,500 square metre land parcel at the SVPI airport campus. At present, all the international cargo is handled by the Ahmedabad Air Cargo Complex, which is managed by the Gujarat State Export Corporation (GSEC) Limited. Estimates suggest that the SVPI airport handled some 60,749 metric tonne cargo during the financial year 2020-21.
