PIL successfully launched first Block Train in Africa
SINGAPORE : As PIL continues to roll out its new intermodal services, it is pleased to announce the successful launch of its First Block Train Service in Africa in December 2022.
The block train, carrying 48 units of 40-footer containers, travelled from Mombasa to Embakasi in Nairobi, Kenya. The containers were packed with furniture, electronics, food products, machinery and garments. Upon arrival at Mombasa, they were moved inland by rail to the Inland Container Depot at Embakasi.
Africa is a key region for PIL. Leveraging on its strong network, PIL looks to offer its intermodal services to customers in Africa to provide a fast and integrated transportation option for their final mile requirements. This solution also aims to support customers in their sustainability efforts to reduce carbon emissions which aligns with PIL’s goal to being a sustainable shipping line.
This first block train service in Kenya follows similar services rolled out in China and Thailand in late 2022.
