President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar visits JNPA, explores port infrastructure and future expansion plans
MUMBAI : Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) – India’s largest container port had the honour of hosting His Excellency Mr. Min Aung Hlaing, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, on Tuesday, June 02, 2026. His Excellency was accompanied by an official delegation comprising 67 officials.
Upon arrival at JNPA, the distinguished delegation was warmly welcomed by Shri Gaurav Dayal, IAS, Chairperson, JNPA, along with the Heads of Departments of JNPA. During the visit, the delegation was given a comprehensive presentation on JNPA’s port infrastructure, operational capabilities, capacity expansion initiatives, strategic development projects, sustainability measures, and future growth roadmap. The presentation also highlighted the development of the Vadhvan Port Project, envisioned as one of India’s largest deep-draft ports and a key driver of maritime trade growth in the region.


The President remarked that JNPA’s emergence as India’s number 1 port reflects its operational excellence and robust service capabilities. He conveyed his country’s interest in advancing port development initiatives and emphasized the delegation’s keen interest in understanding the sector better, learning from JNPA’s experience, and exploring opportunities for knowledge exchange and cooperation.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Gaurav Dayal, IAS, Chairperson, JNPA, said, “It was a privilege to welcome His Excellency Mr Min Aung Hlaing, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and the esteemed delegation to JNPA. The visit provided an excellent opportunity to showcase India’s maritime capabilities, JNPA’s operational excellence, and our future-oriented development initiatives, including the Vadhvan Port Project. We look forward to strengthening maritime and trade cooperation between India and Myanmar and exploring avenues for enhanced regional connectivity and economic collaboration.”
The delegation also visited the port vicinity to gain first-hand insight into the port’s efficient functioning, cargo handling operations, and integrated logistics ecosystem. The visit provided an opportunity to showcase JNPA’s world-class infrastructure and its contribution to facilitating international trade. The visit underscores the growing importance of maritime cooperation and regional partnerships in advancing trade, connectivity, and sustainable economic development across the wider Indo-Pacific region.
About Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA):
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is one of the premier container-handling ports in India. Since its inception on May 26, 1989, JNPA has transformed from a bulk cargo terminal into the premier container port in the country.
Currently, JNPA operates five container terminals – NSFT, NSICT, NSIGT, BMCT and APMT. The Port also has a shallow water berth for general cargo operated by Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal Pvt. Ltd. (NSDT). A Liquid Cargo Terminal present at the JNPA Port is managed by the BPCL-IOCL consortium and the additional liquid cargo terminal developed by JNPA is operated by M/s JSW – JNPT Liquid Terminal Pvt. Ltd. Additionally, the newly constructed coastal berth links other Indian ports and facilitates enhancing the traffic of coastal containers.
Nestled across 277 hectares of land, JNPA also operates a meticulously designed multi-product SEZ, with state-of-the-art infrastructure, to boost export-oriented industries in India.
JNPA is also developing an all-weather, deep-draft, greenfield port at Vadhvan, the 13th Major Port of India in Maharashtra. It is poised to be among the top 10 ports globally and will be a 100% green port since its inception.
