THIRUVANANTHPURAM: Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) has appointed Engineers India Limited (EIL) as the Independent Engineer for its upcoming capacity augmentation project, marking a major milestone in the port’s development as a global maritime hub.

The appointment, made under the Concession Agreement between the Government of Kerala and Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited, positions EIL to provide independent design review and construction monitoring. The role is seen as critical to ensuring the project meets the highest technical and safety standards.

The capacity expansion is scheduled to begin in mid-October 2025, with completion targeted for December 2028. Officials described the upgrade as pivotal to Vizhinjam’s transformation into a world-class transshipment gateway capable of handling next-generation vessels and boosting India’s maritime trade.

The agreement was formally executed by Dr. Divya S. Iyer, IAS, Managing Director of VISL, and Mr. Prem Prasun, General Manager (Business Development & Marketing) at EIL, in the presence of Dr. Kowsikan, IAS, Secretary of the Ports Department, Government of Kerala.

“This partnership strengthens our commitment to deliver a port that meets international benchmarks in capacity and efficiency,” Dr. Iyer said at the signing ceremony.

The Vizhinjam port project, located near Thiruvananthapuram, is one of India’s most strategically important deep-water ports, with the potential to reshape shipping routes and enhance the country’s competitiveness in global trade.
