PIPAVAV : India’s journey towards technology-enabled customs modernisation has reached an important milestone, with Pipavav Port selected as one of only three pilot ports for the phased implementation of 100% Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) of import containers.
Announced as part of the Union Budget 2026–27, the initiative seeks to progressively expand container scanning through advanced imaging systems & AI-enabled risk assessment, strengthening cargo security while enabling faster Trade Facilitation.
Pipavav Port will work closely with the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and Customs authorities to assess the operational readiness required for the phased implementation of the programme. The pilot will evaluate infrastructure, scanning capacity, operational workflows, logistics integration and technology deployment, with the experience and learnings helping to shape the future nationwide rollout of the initiative.
Pipavav Port’s selection reflects its long-standing reputation as a pioneer in India’s port and logistics sector. As India’s first private port developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the country’s first rail PPP project and the first Indian port to operate double-stack container trains, the port has consistently demonstrated its ability to support innovative infrastructure and operational advancements. Its strategic location, multimodal connectivity, direct access to the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) and modern container handling infrastructure make it well positioned to contribute to this significant national programme.
A high-level CBIC delegation, led by Mr. Mohan Kumar Singh, Member (IT & Technology), CBIC, visited Pipavav Port to review the existing infrastructure, assess operational capabilities and discuss the implementation approach for the pilot. The delegation also toured the port facilities to gain first-hand insight into container operations, scanning infrastructure and logistics processes.
The 100% Non-Intrusive Inspection represents a significant step towards creating smarter, more secure and more predictable supply chains while supporting India’s vision of becoming a globally competitive trading nation through digital transformation.
