DP World completes the first 10,000 moves in the BoxPay system

Share This News Story:

DP World, in cooperation in a joint venture called the BoxPay System, with the German SMS Group, which specializes in industrial engineering, announced the completion of the first 10,000 container movements in BoxPay to store containers on elevated platforms at Jebel Port. Ali.

This achievement confirms the success of the experimental platform for this innovative technology, and demonstrates the possibility of making fundamental changes in the way containers are handled in ports around the world.

The construction of the practical test stand with a capacity of 792 containers was completed in July last year at Container Terminal 4 at Jebel Ali Port in Dubai.

It is noteworthy that “BoxBay”, a patented automated container handling system, relies on storing containers on elevated floors of up to 11 floors on steel shelves.

This system is characterized by a capacity that exceeds three times the capacity of conventional container terminals, and thus the area of the terminals can be reduced by up to 70%.

This system is designed to work automatically and help to access any container individually without moving other containers.

The traditional system of container handling relies on storing containers in rows on top of each other, which usually requires moving a lot of containers from their place in order to reach the containers on the lower pallets.

The “BoxBay” system was designed in a way that allows it to be fully electrically powered, and can be operated with solar energy by installing solar panels on its roof.

The technology used in Boxbuy was originally developed by the SMS Group to handle metal coils weighing 50 tons in shelves up to 50 meters high.

This system will be presented to the public at Expo 2020 Dubai next October.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and CEO of DP World, said: “The completion of the first 10,000 container movements proves that the concept of the BoxPay system works on the ground.”

“This technology has the potential to fundamentally change how ports and container terminals operate around the world,” he added.

“The BoxPay system adds value to our operations and our customers and confirms the strengths of the DP World Group as a global provider of smart and innovative logistics solutions,” he added.
