LISBON: BetterSea, provider of a maritime compliance platform and FuelEU marketplace, announced the launch of Stylianos, its new Maritime Compliance AIgent, trained to help shipping companies understand compliance exposure, evaluate most optimum strategies, source market quotations, and prepare compliance actions directly within the BetterSea platform.
Stylianos brings artificial intelligence into the day-to-day workflows behind maritime decarbonisation compliance. Rather than operating as a standalone chatbot, the AI-agent works with the data and functionality available within BetterSea to help users move from a compliance question to an actionable next step.
Users can ask Stylianos to assess compliance costs for individual vessels or voyage scenarios, compare different compliance pathways, identify optimal pool compositions, support marketplace activity: source quotations, perform compliance checks, and guide them through maritime regulation and platform workflows.
The launch expands BetterSea’s ambition to provide full compliance execution through a single platform, while reducing the manual work required to interpret increasingly complex regional and national carbon regulations.
AI-supported execution, with the user in control
BetterSea has designed Stylianos around a human-in-the-loop model.
The AIgent can analyse, recommend, prepare, and source, but it does not execute transactions or actions on behalf of the customer without review and approval. Users remain in control of the final commercial and compliance decisions.
This approach allows shipping companies to benefit from faster analysis and workflow automation while maintaining oversight over actions that may have regulatory, financial, or contractual consequences.
From compliance questions to actionable decisions
Stylianos can support users across several key workflows:
- Estimate compliance costs and simulate voyage scenarios across FuelEU Maritime, EU ETS, UK ETS, the Djibouti carbon tax, and the Gabon carbon tax.
- Suggest optimized compliance pathways based on selected vessels, voyage details, fuel assumptions, other costs, and potential pool compositions.
- Support marketplace activity and sourcing, including identifying quotations for FuelEU surplus and ETS transactions.
- Conduct compliance checks, including counterparty risk assessment.
- Provide maritime compliance and platform guidance, helping users navigate both regulatory questions and BetterSea functionality.
For example, a user can ask Stylianos to calculate the expected compliance cost of a vessel’s upcoming schedule. Once the exposure is identified, the AIgent can help source multiple quotations for the required EUAs or FuelEU surplus and prepare the available options for the user to review.
Built with customer data privacy in mind
Data privacy is a core element of the new functionality.
BetterSea’s AI models are not trained on customer data. Customer data remains the customer’s own and is not used to train BetterSea’s AI models.
This enables customers to use AI-supported compliance workflows, while maintaining the confidentiality of their vessel, operational, commercial, and compliance information.
Bringing intelligence and execution together
Maritime compliance is becoming increasingly fragmented. Shipping companies must now assess and manage obligations across FuelEU Maritime, EU ETS, UK ETS, and a growing number of national carbon regimes, while simultaneously coordinating vessel data, counterparties, procurement requirements, and execution.
