KOLKATA: Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) are strengthening India’s ship repair capabilities through their strategic collaboration under the CSL–Kolkata Ship Repair Unit (CKSRU).
The partnership, which combines the infrastructure and operational strengths of SMPK and CSL, has emerged as an important initiative in developing Kolkata as a strategic hub for ship repair and maritime services.
Since commencing operations in September 2019, the CKSRU has successfully undertaken repairs of 42 vessels, demonstrating the growing capabilities of the facility and the value of the long-term collaboration between the two organisations.
The initiative has also witnessed significant investment in strengthening and modernising the ship repair ecosystem. More than ₹50 crore has been invested towards upgrading infrastructure and enhancing the capabilities required to support efficient and quality ship repair services.
The partnership has generated positive financial outcomes as well. Over the past seven financial years, ₹23 crore has been shared in profits between the partners. For FY 2025–26 alone, the profit share stood at ₹8.79 crore, reflecting the continued growth and operational performance of the ship repair unit.
The CKSRU partnership represents a significant step towards expanding India’s domestic ship repair infrastructure and reducing dependence on overseas facilities. By leveraging the technical expertise of CSL and the strategic location and maritime infrastructure of SMPK, the initiative is contributing to the development of a stronger and more competitive ship repair ecosystem.
The continued progress of CKSRU underscores the importance of strategic partnerships in strengthening India’s maritime capabilities. With sustained investment in infrastructure, enhanced operational efficiency and growing vessel repair activity, the collaboration between SMPK and CSL is poised to play an increasingly important role in supporting India’s maritime ambitions and setting higher standards in ship repair and related services.
