GOA: Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has achieved a major milestone in India’s defence shipbuilding sector, with the Ministry of Defence signing contracts worth ₹53,866.50 crore on 2 November 2026 for the construction of eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) for the Indian Navy.
Under this prestigious programme, Goa Shipyard Limited has been entrusted with the construction of three advanced frontline warships, while the remaining five vessels will be built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE). The order represents the largest-ever contract secured by GSL, underscoring the Government of India’s confidence in the shipyard’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities, technological expertise and proven track record in delivering complex naval platforms.
The Next Generation Corvettes, indigenously designed by the Indian Navy, are expected to significantly strengthen India’s multi-dimensional maritime combat capabilities. These advanced warships will enhance the Navy’s surveillance, deterrence and operational preparedness, further reinforcing India’s ability to safeguard its maritime interests across the region.
For GSL, the prestigious contract represents not merely a significant commercial achievement but also a strategic responsibility in advancing India’s naval modernisation programme. The project will further strengthen the country’s domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem, promote indigenous technology development and create substantial opportunities for Indian industries, MSMEs, ancillary manufacturers and skilled manpower.
