NEW DELHI : Reaffirming the Government of India’s steadfast commitment to the safety, security, and welfare of Indian seafarers, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon’ble Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, chaired a comprehensive review meeting with senior officials of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) to assess the preparedness of the maritime sector in light of the evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia and other regions of strategic importance.
The high-level review focused on evaluating the prevailing maritime security environment, monitoring potential risks to Indian seafarers serving onboard merchant vessels across international shipping routes, and ensuring that robust mechanisms are in place to safeguard their interests during periods of global uncertainty.
Reiterating the Government’s #SeafarerFirst approach, Shri Sonowal emphasised that the welfare and safety of Indian seafarers remain the Ministry’s highest priority. He directed officials to maintain close coordination with Indian missions abroad, maritime administrations, shipping companies, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure timely assistance, effective communication, and prompt response in case of any emerging challenges.
The meeting also reviewed existing emergency response protocols, contingency preparedness, and measures to facilitate the safe movement and repatriation of Indian seafarers, whenever required. Officials discussed strengthening real-time monitoring of developments in sensitive maritime regions, enhancing information-sharing mechanisms, and ensuring continuous engagement with industry stakeholders to mitigate operational risks.
The Minister stressed the importance of maintaining uninterrupted maritime operations while ensuring that the highest standards of safety, security, and crew welfare are upheld. He also underscored the need for proactive planning, coordinated action, and regular assessments to enable swift decision-making in response to changing geopolitical conditions.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways continues to closely monitor the evolving global situation and remains committed to extending every possible support to Indian seafarers. Through sustained coordination with national and international maritime agencies, the Government is working to ensure that India’s maritime workforce remains safe, secure, and well-supported while contributing to global shipping and trade.
