Cochin Port tops India’s major ports with 22% growth in container throughput

KOCHI: Cochin Port Authority has emerged as the leading performer among India’s Major Ports in container throughput growth, recording an impressive 22% year-on-year increase at ICTT Vallarpadam operated by DP World during April–September 2026. The achievement places Cochin Port at the No. 1 position in terms of container growth among the country’s Major Ports during the six-month period.

Cochin Port’s performance significantly exceeded the average container throughput growth of 12% recorded by all Major Ports, highlighting its growing competitiveness and strengthening role in India’s maritime trade and logistics network.

The strong growth reflects the port’s increasing contribution to containerised cargo movement and its importance in supporting international trade, export-import activities and supply chain connectivity. As a key maritime gateway on India’s southwest coast, Cochin Port plays a vital role in connecting regional industries and businesses with domestic and global markets.

The 22% growth also underscores the importance of efficient port operations, reliable cargo-handling infrastructure and improved logistics connectivity in meeting the evolving requirements of the shipping and trade sectors.

Cochin Port’s achievement reinforces its position as a significant contributor to India’s maritime development and the continued expansion of containerised trade. Sustained growth in container throughput is expected to further strengthen the port’s role in facilitating trade, supporting exporters and importers, and enhancing the efficiency of the country’s logistics ecosystem.

With container throughput growth nearly double the 12% average of India’s Major Ports, Cochin Port has demonstrated strong momentum and emerged as a leading performer in the country’s maritime sector.
