JNPA inaugurates Phase 1 of Automated Empty Container Yard at Nhava Sheva

NHAVA SHEVA: The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), in collaboration with RSA Global, has inaugurated Phase 1 of a 25-hectare automated Empty Container Yard at Nhava Sheva, developed by RSA Global under the Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) initiative.

The new facility marks an important step towards strengthening the supporting logistics infrastructure around JNPA and improving the efficiency of empty container storage, handling and movement in the port ecosystem.

Phase 1 introduces a digital-first approach to yard management, with technology-enabled systems designed to provide greater visibility, control and transparency across container operations. The facility incorporates real-time inventory visibility, OCR-enabled automated gate operations, QR and RFID-based container tracking and inspection facilities, enabling more streamlined movement and monitoring of containers within the yard.

The facility also includes dedicated truck parking areas and an integrated internal road network, supporting smoother vehicle circulation and helping improve operational efficiency within the yard.

The automated yard is expected to strengthen the availability of dedicated infrastructure for empty container storage and handling, while reducing manual intervention and enabling more efficient coordination among stakeholders involved in container logistics.

Developed as a phased project, the facility will see subsequent phases further enhance storage capacity, handling capabilities and automation, creating a larger and more technology-driven empty container management ecosystem at Nhava Sheva.

The initiative is aligned with JNPA’s continued focus on Ease of Doing Business, digitalisation and modernisation of port-linked logistics infrastructure. By integrating automation, digital tracking and improved yard infrastructure, the project is aimed at supporting more transparent, predictable and efficient container operations for the EXIM trade community.

The development further reinforces JNPA’s role in building a modern, technology-enabled and integrated logistics ecosystem, supporting the growing requirements of India’s containerised trade and strengthening the overall efficiency of the port-led supply chain.
