Mumbai Port’s Jawahar Dweep becomes India’s first plastic-free oil terminal

MUMBAI: The Mumbai Port Authority declared its Jawahar Dweep Marine Oil Terminal plastic-free on the Gandhi Jayanti (2 October), marking a significant environmental milestone for India’s maritime sector.

The offshore facility becomes the country’s first oil terminal to completely eliminate single-use plastics, with the announcement made during the Swachhata Abhiyan 2026 cleanliness programme held to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.

The island terminal, also known as Butcher Island, consists of five berths handling crude oil and petroleum products approximately four kilometres off Mumbai’s coast.

The facility serves major refineries including BPCL, HPCL, IOCL, and ONGC, and petroleum cargo accounts for nearly three-fifths of Mumbai Port’s overall traffic.

He also dedicated new Oil Spill Response facilities to the nation during the event.

The Mumbai Port Authority banned single-use plastics across its premises from September 2021, following the Prime Minister’s national call to curb plastic pollution.

The port authority has now committed to extending similar measures across its docks, residential colonies, and coastal areas throughout the remainder of the year.
