New Mangalore Port Authority handles maiden steel grade pig iron cargo

MANGALURU: New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) has achieved a milestone with the first-ever handling of steel grade pig iron ore cargo from Kirloskar Ferrous Industries Ltd (KFIL), a manufacturer of pig iron, grey iron castings, seamless steel tubes and alloy steel.

According to NMPA, the maiden export shipment comprised 31,500 tonnes of steel grade pig iron to Kenya aboard m.v. Resolute Bay with Stemcor as the overseas buyer. The vessel was represented by GAC Shipping (India) Pvt Ltd, while Sri Ganesh Shipping Agency was the stevedore operator.

A statement said this shipment marks the first consignment of steel grade pig iron handled through NMPA, reinforcing the port’s growing capabilities in handling diverse cargoes and expanding India’s global trade footprint.

The overall cargo handling at NMPA recorded a growth of 11.13 per cent in the first four months of 2026-27. NMPA handled 15.70 million tonnes (mt) of cargo during April-July of 2026-27 against 14.19 mt in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.
