KOCHI : Norwegian shipping company Samskip agreed with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), an Indian shipbuilding firm, on the design and construction of two zero-emission feeder container vessels with an option for two more boxships.

According to the statement, this project is one of the world’s first zero-emission feeder container vessels, fuelled by hydrogen fuel cells and, eventually, green hydrogen.

The ships will be designed to serve the European market, where ecological shipping options are in high demand, and will be able to carry approximately 365 45-feet long high cube containers.

Each vessel is anticipated to save around 25,000 tonnes of CO2 per year when operating in zero-emission mode.

The delivery of the ships is expected to start in the third quarter of 2025.

This project is funded by the Norwegian government’s green funding plan that aims to achieve emission-free transportation options by implementing cutting-edge future technologies.
